What is Helicobacter pylori?

Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori for short) is a bacterium, a kind of germ, which lives in the sticky mucus that lines the stomach. About 40% of people in the UK have H. pylori in their stomach so it is very common. In nearly nine out of 10 people who have H. pylori, it does not cause any problems.

What are the commonest causes of constipation?

A large number of drugs or medicines that you may have been prescribed or have bought over-the-counter can cause constipation (see box). If your symptoms began (or got worse) after starting one of these drugs, it may be worth asking your doctor if there are any less-constipating alternatives. 

 


Drugs that can cause constipation

• Pain-killers (especially codeine-containing compounds)
• Antacids (especially if containing aluminium)
• Iron tablets
• Blood pressure medications (not all)
• Antidepressants (not all)
• Anti-epilepsy and anti-Parkinson’s disease drugs
