Research Today – Cure Tomorrow Medical research is a long-term business. It can take many years for a scientist’s or a doctor’s inspired idea to develop into a new drug or a new treatment. Every day, small advances are made and every day we come a little closer to finding cures for serious digestive cancers and for the many chronic illnesses that can make so many people’s lives so miserable. We need to know that funds are in place for the future so that the investments in research we are making today will result in the development of new drugs and treatments tomorrow.
After taking care of your family and those closest to you, you can help ensure that will happen by leaving a sum of money to Core when you write or change your will. Supporting our work Core – formerly the Digestive Disorders Foundation – is the only charity in the UK that that funds research into all the diseases that affect the gut and liver. We are called Core because the digestive system, from the oesophagus to the bowel, is at the core of our body and a good digestive system is the core of good health.
We are entirely dependant on voluntary donations.
The charity was established in 1971 with the help and support of the British Society of Gastroenterology. Today it supports Clinical Research Fellows and Research Scientists at hospitals and universities throughout the UK, investigating conditions such as pancreatitis, hepatitis, ulcerative colitis, crohn’s disease and digestive cancers. All research that we fund is rigorously peer-reviewed. The members of our Research Awards Committee, which makes the decisions about what research we fund, are highly respected scientists and doctors who are acknowledged throughout the world as experts in their fields.
Our funding is also an important element in providing training to young researchers at the beginning of their scientific or medical careers. Using the right words If you are considering leaving a legacy to support our work, please accept our sincere thanks. It would help us enormously to know of your intention and we have made it as simple as possible for you to advise us – just complete the form below and return it to us or ask your solicitor to do so.
Although making or changing your Will is simple it is important that you consult a solicitor or professional advisor. The wording in your Will is very important. It will, for example, help us to know whether you want to leave us a specific amount of money or property, or whether you are leaving us the residuary amount of your estate (what is left after all your other bequests have been taken into account).
For guidance, we have given examples of these below.
I give the sum of £…………………(or the specified shares or item(s) of property) to Core, 3 St Andrews Place, London, NW1 4LB, registered charity number 262762. I further direct that the receipt of a Director or other officer of Core for the time being shall be a full and sufficient discharge of the said gift.

I give the residue of my estate to Core, 3 St Andrews Place, London, NW1 4LB, registered charity number 262762 for its general charitable purposes. I further direct that the receipt of a Director or other officer of CORE for the time being shall be a full and sufficient discharge of the said gift. Inheritance Tax A legacy to a charity may reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax due. Inheritance Tax is currently fixed at a flat rate of 40%. Your estate may be subject to Inheritance Tax if the value of your property and possessions come to more than £312,000. This excludes any money or property you leave to our spouse if he or she lives in the United Kingdom. It also excludes any legacies to charity. Your solicitor will advise you about current tax legislation. If you are intending to or have already made a pledge please let us know: Email |
